The grim dawn lightens thin bleak clouds;
In the hill clefts beyond the flooded meadows Lies death-pale, death-still mist.
We trudge along wearily,
Heavy with lack of sleep,
Spiritless, yet with pretence of gaiety.
The sun brings crimson to the colourless sky; Light gleams from brass and steel—
We trudge on wearily—
O God, end this bleak anguish
Soon, soon, with vivid crimson death, End it in mist-pale sleep!

why does mrs. bird oppose the fugitive slave act? use specific evidence from the reading to support your answer
Feliz [49]

Answer: She sympathizes with the runaway slaves, convinced that it is her Christian duty to help them.

Explanation:

Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel from 1852. It was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and is believed to have strongly influenced popular attitudes towards slavery at the time it was written.

In the novel, Senator Bird participates in passing the Fugitive Slave Act, which states that it is a crime to help a runaway slave. His wife, Mrs. Bird, strongly opposes the act and tries to prove it is morally wrong. She claims that her husband should be ashamed because he supports the act, and is certain that she will not abide by it. Mrs. Bird believes that her Christian duty is to help anyone who is in a worse position. Senator and her clearly have different opinions on this subject. However, when the two runaways arrive at their property, both Mrs. Bird and her husband offer them security. They are given food and shelter. This demonstrates that Mrs. Bird significantly influenced her husband's sense of right and wrong - his compassion prevails.

Unlike many retellings of the myth of Icarus, this poem suggests that Icarus did the right thing. Explain why, citing evidence f
lozanna [386]

Answer:

According to Line 1 and Line 10 of the poem, it can be inferred that Icarus is better off testing his limits, a feat he must embark on in order to discover his abilities instead of wondering somewhere years later what would have been.

 1. The first opens with a question asking to know what else the boy could have done
 2. in the tenth and opening of the eleventh line, he alludes that the boy flew exactly to the point of wisdom;
 3. Following through on that, the remainder of the eleventh and twelfth line rejects the notion of living in ignorance of ones capabilities and possibilities;
 4. The confirmation that Icarus now knew his strengths, weaknesses and capabilities is easily rested with the eighteenth line.

Rainbow [258]

Answer:Being realistic and rational about love doesn’t diminish the intense emotional experience that it love. It simply enhances it and makes it better. Unless of course, you love a complete j.e.r.k, in which case being rational will help you find someone better.

How is conformity and individuality shown in "no gumption"
Vesna [10]

Individuality has been shown in "No Gumption" by showing the traits and the characteristics of Russell Baker that his mother realized which made him a writer. One of that situation was when he was eleven years old, he brought a text graded with A and his mother decided he could be a writer

Explanation:

"No Gumption" is a chapter taken from autobiography of Russell Baker where he tells how for his mother he did not have gumption at all, he was a shy boy who had to help his family in a difficult time, after his father's death. In this chapter, the writer is in the obligation of selling magazines to support his family, but the decision was made by his mother, because he was the man of the family and he was superposed to bring some money.

Unfortunately he was not like his younger sister Doris, who was intelligent and diligent. He had this job during a time, but he did not succeed, he did not feel comfortable ringing doors, actually, he felt scared of this. Finally, when he was eleven years old, he brought a text graded with A and his mother decided he could be a writer, and this time he liked this decision, because writers did not have to sell, writers did not have to ring doors.
