The writer is trying to imply that the streets act like veins, life flows through a street such as blood flows through our veins. When a vein ruptures, blood spews out creating a messy, chaotic scene. The author makes a great comparison between ruptured veins and streets of the small German town to help form ideas in people's minds of what happened to the town after it was bombed.
