First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha, a junior at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. Slowly, a bit distracted, he would get up and move among his men, checking the perimeter, then at full dark he would return to his hole and watch the night and wonder if Martha was a virgin.

The tone the author was trying to give was very solemn and sad because the author is explaining that Prometheus is so worried about the future while his brother is so focused on the past and many people know that if you are constantly worried about the future or constantly thinking about things you should’ve done in the past, it can ruin the moment for you.
