The Catholics chose December 6 as St. Nicholas Day. That day was meant for the veneration of the saints as well as the giving of gifts. To eliminate the act of venerating saints and draw more attention to Christ, Martin Luther changed the date of gifts-giving from December 6 to Christmas Eve. A young child was used to depict Christ or an angel, who brought gifts for the children.

The Christkind dropped gifts under the Christmas tree after which, the children can pick it. Today, the Santa Claus plays this role in some climes.
