Contractions are words like he'd or they're, they are a shortened version of two words combined. Formal writing wouldn't have these. Formal writing often has a respectful tone to it, as it is usually targeted towards mature audiences. Informal writing wouldn't have proper punctuation because informal writing is more laid back.</em>
