Kazeer [188]

Answer:

The speaker of the poem is a slave on the ship. I know this because of the use of the word "us" which implies that the speaker of the poem is on the ship as well. Another line from the poem that tells me this is when it says, "where we lay for weeks and months." This line uses the word "we" which leaves the same effect as the word "us". The speaker is using these words to show us that they along with other are trapped on the ship in horrible conditions.

Why is it significant that many Jim Crow laws reference gender as well as race?
NISA [10]

The Jim Crow laws were designed to enforce discrimination and segregation in the south. Their purpose was to ensure that white Americans remain in control over the black population through economic and social dominance. As well as in control over women too. Unfortunately, men deemed women only slightly better than African Americans in terms of their social standing as they expected them to be subservient to men who were the heads of the households.
