El narrador de este cuento es una asesino sin nombre, que intenta convencer al lector que no esta loco y no debe responsabilizarse por los crímenes de los que es acusado.

Puesto desde el punto de vista de un hombre que esta a punto de ser ahorcado se ve la desesperación por persuadir al lector de que es inocente.

Su primera casa es convertida en la prisión de la esposa y de las mascotas, a través de la lectura el lector llega a descubrir que la familia del protagonista era rica y e¿incluso tenia sirvientes a su disposición.
