I believe a "a bird" is a subject because I did process of elimination. It can't be a verb, because you cannot "do a bird." It depends what the context of the sentence is as well. Is there a clear object, or subject? Otherwise, I would say subject.
It would be D many American soldiers got really encouraged by their religion, they would even have talks about how the war emotionally destroyed them, such like therapy these days but back then it was mostly about religion and if god would accept them after all the things they have done.
