To me, we would call it CQC

Explanation:

The above paragraph seems to be following the pattern of restate, quote, comment. This is what we in my school call a CQC format. This is when you would (as I think they are doing) Start the paragraph, answer a question, provide a fact, answer the fact, then provide a quote, the comment on  the quote clarifying it.

Hi, the answer would be D - direct object. It cannot be the subject, because the subject of the sentence is "the essay". It isn't object of a preposition, as there is no preposition there. It is not a possessive, and given that this adjectival clause is a part of "the mountain", which is a direct object, it must be a direct object as well.
