World War II helped African Americans to gain momentum towards civil rights.

African Americans played a vital role in the war effort both overseas and at home. Employment of African American men greatly increased during this time, as the millions of men drafted in the military draft opened up a significant amount of factory jobs. Along with this, African-American men joined the military. One of the most popular groups was the Tuskegee Airmen, who flew thousands of missions and helped the US significantly when fighting in Europe. Ultimately, the sacrifice of these citizens in helping the war effort showed their dedication to this country and helped to show skeptics that they deserve the same rights as other citizens.

What happened first on the road toward abolishing apartheid?
EastWind [94]

D. Several political groups protested against apartheid.

Explanation:

Apartheid was a segregation system in South Africa that prohibited from blacks and whites to do numerous things away from one another. This started in 1948, and many people did not agree with this as it affected their everyday lives. Blacks were not allowed to live in white neighborhoods or even interact with white people. One of the first things that happened as a way to abolish apartheid was the numerous political groups that would protest to get rid of apartheid.

1993 Nelson Mandela

showed the power of peaceful ways of achieving freedom & equality

for Black Africans in South Africa

spent 27 years in Robben Island Prison

damaging global financial sanctions against South Africa were the main reason for the release and success of Mandela

Nelson Mandela became the leader of South Africa through democratic elections

Nelson Mandela was the head of the African National Congress which was a political party started by women of South Africa

the African National Congress party had members of every race

he made a lasting contribution to world peace by showing that freedom, equality and voting rights can be achieved through peaceful means like economic sanctions

Mandela went to prison because he opposed South Africa's apartheid laws

he made a lasting contribution to world peace by showing that democracy while sometimes flawed can be a self fixing system because he came to power through elections rather than using military ways

he stuck with the system, went to prison, rather than try to escape it and eventually used the same system to become president

as president he continued with the democratic. he did not dismantle it to stay in power

as president he set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission basically asking people of all races to confess all their crimes during apartheid and then rather than punishing them, he gave them immunity, meaning they did not have to go to prison. Because of the immunity many people came forward. it was an act of justice rather than revenge
