An organic compound of the alkanal group. It is the first member of the group with one carbon atom, methanal whose chemical formula is written as CH2O. The disinfectant and biocide characteristic of formaldehyde makes it a good fit for the treatment and preservation of cadavers. Application of formaldehyde on dead bodies through injection into their arterial system, helps prevent decomposition and helps regulate the appearance of the body in other to serve the purpose of for which the body was embalmed.
