Unfortunately, problems began as soon as construction started. It rained every day, causing the soil to become heavy and sloppy.

Temperatures climbed as high as 130 degrees. Tropical diseases such as yellow fever and malaria caused illness or death to the majority of workers. These complications put a great deal of stress on the project. The money allotted to build the canal quickly ran out. In 1899, France abandoned the project.

Expansion of idea, all that glitters is not gold(or any one)
nevsk [136]

Answer:

Explanation:

The idea “all that glitters is not gold” was made common by William Shakespeare. The expression comes from the idea that gold is one of the most valuable materials in the world, and that we can recognize it by its shine. Yet, we have to be careful as not everything that glitters and shines will be made of gold. Therefore, the saying tries to warn us that not everything that looks good will turn out to be precious at the end and that we can easily be tricked into thinking something is worth more than it actually is. The first sight of something will not determine its full value.
