“That’s as may be,” said Mr. Connolly. “But you’re a girl, and there’s no getting around that. A girl is not going to be safe ou

t there.”
“We’ll be coming along behind her,” said Lily. “She won’t be on her own for long.”

“Well, I wouldn’t let any girl of mine do it,” said Mrs. Connolly.

“We do what we have to do,” said Lily firmly. But later, when the family was alone, she took out her sewing scissors and cut Margaret’s long hair.

Which choice best explains why Lily cuts Margaret’s hair?

to punish Margaret for speaking disrespectfully to Mr. Connolly
to show Margaret that she is stronger than her brothers
to make sure Margaret is not distracted while she is riding
to help Margaret blend in with the men who are racing for land

He appears to be crafty when, which I assume is forgiving men, as it says, "He forgave sins easily...hoped to gain a little money...". And based on his profession, it seems inappropriate to [hang around those living in slum] and know all the taverns, inkeepers and barmaids. Also, when it says he arranged many women's marriages, it seems like he was somewhat romantically involved which is probably why he was so well loved. I mean, the author chose to only include many young women into the phrase. Overall, I believe the friar serves himself.

Convert the following sentence from compound to complex sentence.
m_a_m_a [10]

Answer:

As much as water is an endangered resource, we cannot live without it.

Explanation:

A compound sentence is a sentence that has two independent clauses, meaning there should be a conjunction to connect the two clauses (FANBOYS) or a semicolon.

A complex sentence has one independent clause and one dependent clause.

Note that independent clauses can stand alone as a sentence, meaning they have both a subject and a predicate.

On the other hand, a dependent clause can not stand alone as a sentence, has both a subject and verb, and will most often start with a subordinating conjunction.

We have the sentence:

Water is an endangered resource and we cannot live without it.

We can make it:

As much as water is an endangered resource, we cannot live without it.

As much as is the subordinating conjunction that makes the first clause dependent.

"We cannot live without it" is the independent clause.

You can remove "As much as" and replace it with any subordinating conjunction that makes sense, it's just hard to find a perfect replacement for the conjunction "and."
