Ramesses II was a powerful pharaoh in Egypt. During his reign, Egypt expanded. This was brought about by Ramesses II's military campaigns that targeted geographical expansion and part of these was the retrieval of Egypt's territory which was claimed by the Hittites.

He had a constant battle with the Hittites that took many years, which almost defeated the Egyptians. However, in the end, Ramesses II remained victorious. In order to end such long conflict with the Hittites, Ramesses II entered into a "peace treaty" with them. This peace treaty is considered to be the first of its kind.
