Mesoamérica significa "América media". Este término se propuso para referirse a un espacio cultural que abarca desde la parte meridional de México hasta Costa Rica, el cual se diferencia de otras regiones por la forma de vida de sus pobladores, su clima y su geografía. Mesoamérica es un espacio de climas y paisajes variados, como valles, bosques, costas, pantanos y selvas.

Sus tierras son húmedas y fértiles, adecuadas para la agricultura, además hay numerosos lagos y ríos. Aún con esa diversidad, los habitantes de la región tenían ciertas características en común, por ejemplo, sus sociedades se organizaban en grupos con diferentes funciones e importancia.
