Carthage and Rome wanted to control the island of Sicily. This caused the first Punic War. Rome sent their army to Sicily to prevent the Carthaginians from taking over the island. The Carthaginians wanted to stop Rome so they tried defending the island. Rome eventually built up their navy and beat the Carthaginian navy. After that, Carthage built up its empire into southern Spain. Rome was not happy that Carthage gained land. This would lead to the second Punic War. The people in Spain joined forces with the Romans and fought the Carthaginians. In return, Carthage sent their best general, Hannibal, to attack Italy. Even with heavy losses, the Carthaginians fought and began raiding Italy. A Roman general named Scipio than invaded Carthage. Hannibal then returned to defend Carthage. Scipio still overpowered the Carthaginians and defeated them at the Battle of Zama. Carthage was no longer a military power and had to give up its navy, and was forced to pay a fine.
