To understand unit rates, always keep the number 1 in mind.

Let’s say we’re looking at a table with the input of 2 and output of 6. The first step is to find what the multiplier is.
If we divide 6 and 2, we get 3. Another way to think about it is “what multiplied by 2 gets 6?” So we now know our multiplier is 3.

However, it is not the unit rate. The unit rate is the base number (1) and the multiplier.

To get the the base number and the multiplier, we now have to look for a number that can be divided by both the input and output. In this case, the number 2.

2 divided by 2 is 1. 6 divided by 2 is 3. We now have the numbers 1 and 3. These are the base numbers.

When thinking of unit rate, we know that a unit is one part of ____, so one unit plus another unit goes on and on.

Hope this helps!

Maurinko [17]

Combine the terms. Note that: one positive and one negative sign results in a negative sign.

Simplify: 5 + (-4) = 5 - 4 = 1

1 + (-7) = 1 - 7 = -6

-6 + 2 = -4

-4 is your answer
