A theme is a main idea or underlying meaning of a literary piece that emerges from the treatment the author gives to a subject.
In <em>Animal Farm</em> there are many themes. One of them, is <u>totalitarianism</u>. The message that Orwell tries to convey throughout the story is that regardless of the type, all totalitarian regimes are fundamentally the same, because they are founded on the oppression of the lower classes and of fthe individual as well.
Napoleon's rise to power is the clearest example of this theme. He and the pigs run <em>Animal Farm</em> claiming that they advocate for animals' rights against evil humans, but the truth is that they will maintain their power by any means necessary, as any other sort of totalitarian regime.
This would change the tension of the piece and make it read either faster or slower, which could also be called pacing.

Okonkwo attempts to determine his own fate. Knowing his father was a failure, he works the yam fields twice as hard to compensate. Obviously, as a character, Okonkwo has no control over his and his tribe's death. Yet, Okonkwo fights to the death, regardless. So, in a way, he chooses his fate by beheading the messenger. He chooses to be placed in a situation which allows him to be aggressive and violent so as to cause his own self-destruction by violent means.
For example, the words in the columns below all rhyme with one another because they share the same vowel sound. Notice that the only thing that changes is the first consonant sound. The consonant sound after the vowel is the same for each word. When two words or phrases differ by only one sound, they are minimal pairs.

"The captain of the fishing vessel confirmed that I had made the best catch of the day." Well there isn't any way to prove this with logic. This is just what he said. Now if the captain measured all the fish side by side, then that would prove somebody really made the best catch.
"If you want to have the most fun on a bicycle, hybrid trail bikes are the most thrilling to ride." And this is just an opinion. Not everybody would agree hybrid bike trails are thrilling. So this can't be proven and is not logic.
