A transmembrane protein has the following properties: it has two binding sites, one for solute A and one for solute B. The prote

in can undergo a conformational change to switch between two states: either both binding sites are exposed exclusively on one side of the membrane or both binding sites are exposed exclusively on the other side of the membrane. The protein can switch between the two conformational states only if both binding sites are occupied or if both binding sites are empty, but cannot switch if only one binding site is occupied. What kind of protein do these properties define

Answer:

The protein is a symport protein.

Explanation:

Transport proteins are proteins which are involved in the transport of solutes across the cell membrane. The binding of the solute to be transported across the membrane causes a conformational change in the shape of the protein, thereby moving the molecule to the side of nthe membrane it is to be transported. The difference in the concentration of the solute across the membrane known as concentration gradient is mainly responsible for the transport of molecules by the transport proteins.

There are three types of transport proteins: uniport, symport and antiport transport proteins.

Uniporters are involved in moving only one molecule across a membrane

Symporters are involved in moving two or more molecule across a membrane in the same direction.

Antiporters are involved in moving two or more molecule across a membrane in opposite directions.

From the description of the transport protein in the question, both solutes A and B are moved across the membrane simultaneously in the same direction. Therefore, the protein is a symport protein.

Match the following items. 1. idiosyncrasies hallucinations and paranoia 2. severity Jauqin likes to display his baseball cards
marta [7]

Answer:

1. Idiosyncrasies - Jauqin likes to display his baseball cards in a triangle pattern and doesn't like anyone to mess them up

2. Severity – Intensity of an illness

3. Observable – Noticeable

4. Disorder – Hallucinations and Paranoia

Explanation:

1. Idiosyncrasies - Jauqin likes to display his baseball cards in a triangle pattern and doesn't like anyone to mess them up

Idiosyncrasies refers to a feature of an individual that is considered rather peculiar, which may also be a habit of an eccentric likes. In the statement about Jauqin, we see him to have a habit of arranging baseball cards in a particular pattern and disapproving of anyone who disturbs the pattern. This is not common behavior, and is unusual -indicative of an idiosyncratic behavior.

2. Severity – Intensity of an illness

Severity is the magnitude or degree of any thing. With regard to abnormal behavior, severity refers to the intensity of the attitudes or actions. Behaviors are known to have various stages or levels, and as a condition progresses without proper treatment or neutralization, it is seen that its intensity increases.

3. Observable – Noticeable

By definition, observable refers to anything that can be discerned, is visible, or noticeable. With regard to abnormal behaviors, observable abnormal behaviors is most commonly targeted in psychology, instead of the subjects cognitive capacities. Observable behaviors are a translation of the perceptions, reasoning and reactions of the subject.

4. Disorder – Hallucinations and Paranoia

Hallucinations are false perceptions of entities or happenings. This is a disorder (illness) that is of a sensory nature, meaning that it may involve hearing, seeing, tasting, feeling or smelling objects that may not have actually occurred.

Paranoia, on the other hand, though also a disorder, is one that involves a false notion or belief that results as a misinterpretation of a situation and majorly involves suspicion and skepticism. For example, they might be overcome with the feeling that they are being chased by the FBI, or might feel like they are being lied to or cheated on in any manner.

Hope this helps!
