1. When the people living in the faction system turn 16, they are required to take an aptitude test, which assigns them with the faction that their genes best match up with. On the day of the choosing ceremony, all of those kids are gathered in a room that is arranged into circles. Each faction has their own circle, and in the last circle are five large metal bowls that represent the five factions. The Abnegation bowl contains dull grey stones, the one fore Erudite is filled with water, Amity's has earth, Candor is represented by glass, and lit coals make up the Dauntless' bowl. The names of each teen are called out in alphabetical order. When your name is called, you are to cut your hand with the knife and let your blood spill into the bowl of the faction you wish to join. Once the choosing ceremony is complete, you must participate in the initiation of each faction, which takes a few weeks. If you do not pass initiation, you are considered factionless.
