The colony of Pennsylvania was established by William Penn as a 'Holy Experiment'. It was given to him by the king in 1681, in payment of a debt he had to Penn's father. Amongst the other English colonies, Penn was the first leader of his colony that established peace with the natives. Then Penn made a peace treaty with the Leni lenape indians, and bought land from them.
