As a Steward, James Johnson knows the most about the ship compared to the three of them, and connects the sound to a mishap of the ship and thinks that it means they have to make a trip to Belfast. Night Baker Walter Welford was startled by the noise because the jolt that accompanied it caused a pan of rolls to fall off the top of the oven. Marguerite Frolicher connects the noise to something familiar to her- ferries making a sloppy landing.
