The two poems by Auden and Williams, as well as Brueghel's painting, make reference to how people continue doing their daily activities at the same time someone is experiencing torment or distress. The three works depict people working on the land, eating, opening a window or walking, while Icarus' wings fail and he falls into the sea, unnoticed by anyone.
