The novel began by talking about Regile having lost all beliefs and how boys were kidnapped and brought to Papa Mavuso, forced to work in an illegal gold mine.

The novel takes place in the abandoned gold mine near Barberton.

The main conflict is how and if they should escape.

The most important social condition is the way the kids are treated. Their lives there are terrible and brutal, receiving severe beatings from time to time.
