INTRODUCTION

George Washington is best known for being the first president of The United States and being one of the founding fathers. While he was alive he was already known as the father of his country and his reputation is well known today as one of the greatest heroes of The United States.

WASHINGTONS EARLY LIFE

George Washington was born on February 11, 1731. He was the oldest child born to father, Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington however he had older siblings from his father’s first marriage. He was born and raised on Pope’s Creek Estate near Colonial Beach, Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Augustine Washington was of English descent with ancestors coming from Sulgrave in England. His grandfather John Washington emigrated to Virginia in 1657. Augustine was a tobacco planter whose plantation was worked by slaves.

George Washington was one of seven children from his father’s two marriages. Augustin died when George was only 11 years old and he was brought up by his half-brother, Lawrence Washington.

WASHINGTON AND WAR

Between the years of 1789 and 1797, George Washington was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. He fought and led forces throughout the American Revolutionary War. It was during this time that he was admired for his leadership talents. As Commander-in-Chief, he was able to force the British army out of Boston in 1776. Other victories Washington enjoyed were the battles of Trenton and Princeton.

WASHINGTON AND THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION

After the war, George Washington was called on to preside over the United States Constitution. Washington had planned to retire to Virginia and the tobacco plantation after the constitution but other founding fathers who attended the convention had other plans for him. He was voted the first president of the United States in a unanimous victory.

Washington served as president from April 30, 1789 up until March 4, 1797. As president, Washington created a strong and well financed government. This government were able to keep on neutral terms in the French Revolutionary wars and the government were also able to supress the Whiskey Revolution. Washington’s success in government won him the heart of all Americans.

CONCLUSION

George Washington was a man who enjoyed such skill as a leader that it helped him win many victories in the American Revolutionary War. His success did not end there as he became one of the founding fathers and further became the first president of the United States. He is considered one of America’s best loved heroes due to his army and political careers achieving much along the way.
