Therefore, a particular point mutation in the nucleotide sequence can result in only one amino acid modification. A nonoverlapping genetic code indicates that the same letter (i.e., the same nucleotide) can not be used for two different codons. The non-overlapping nature of the genetic code was discovered by Tsugita and Fraenkel-Conrat (1960) by observing point mutations in the tobacco mosaic virus.
