Well, America's very first hate crime would be the Settlers pillaging the Native American villages, and destroying them. Hate crimes happens when there is "hatred" obviously; it is quite hard to explain why hate crimes occur. I would say that jealousy is one of the top reasons behind hatred, hope this helps.
