the scopes trial (also known as "the monkey trial") was a lawsuit against a teacher (scopes), who taught evolution in school when that was against the law and you were only supposed to teach things of religion and "evolution was against religion". America was interested in this trial because some saw it as a bad thing, and others thought he should be allowed to teach it. In The end, scopes, the teacher, was fined $100, but the law of not being able to teach evolution was put under question, and many people thought it shouldn't exist.
