It is true that Catastrophism states that the Earth has been affected by sudden, short-lived, violent events that were sometimes worldwide. Creationists always opt for the catastrophic explanation and more often than not, this is the dynamic that best explains what we see in nature.

Opposed to gradualism or uniformitarianism, which states that there an order in nature that is continuing manifesting, Catastrophism says that cataclysmic events in the past have formed the landscape that we have today on the planet. It makes reference to terrible earthquakes, historic deluges, or asteroids impacts on the surface of the Earth, or volcanic explosions, that have directly affected the life on the planet.
