Personification is the attribution of human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the description of abstract traits in human shape.

In the lines from the poem "Columbus," by Joaquin Miller, the mate uses figurative language to illustrate the sea. In that respect, he uses personification to give the sea human qualities. Therefore, the sea is depicted as a man who exhibits his teeth and is ready to give a bite.

In the world’s rainforest, nearly 1 hectare is destroyed per second. This adds up to nearly 31 million hectares per year; the size bigger than Poland. As a result, the environment is being damaged: 137 species of wildlife are becoming extinct per year. Humans are benefiting from this destruction by making a profit off logging and making cheap products.
