You want to know the factor by which 3 2/3 is multiplied to get 7 1/3.

1. You can estimate that it is 2 from 7/3 ≈ 2, then check by multiplication to see if that is right.
.. 2*(3 2/3) = 6 4/3 = 7 1/3 . . . . 2 is the correct factor.

2. You can divide 7 1/3 by 3 2/3 to see what the factor is.
.. (7 1/3)/(3 2/3) = (22/3)/(11/3) = 22/11 = 2 . . . . 2 is the factor Earl used.

3. You could see how many times you can subtract 3 2/3 from 7 1/3.
.. 7 1/3 -3 2/3 = (7 -3) +(1/3 -2/3) = 4 -1/3 = 3 2/3 . . . . . subtracting once gives 3 2/3
.. 3 2/3 -3 2/3 = 0 . . . . . . subtracting twice gives 0, so the factor is 2.

4. You could add 3 2/3 to see how many times it takes to get 7 1/3.
.. 3 2/3 +3 2/3 = (3 +3) +(2/3 +2/3) = 6 +4/3 = 7 1/3
We only need to add two values of 3 2/3 to get 7 1/3, so the factor is 2.

James has $5.00 more than three times what Catherine has. Together they have $41.00. How much does each student have?
Tpy6a [65]
Hey.

acc'g to the conditions :

Let Catherine has x
and James has 5 + 3x

Then,

5 + 4x = 41 \\ \\ \implies 4x +5 -5 = 41-5 \\ \\ \implies 4x = 36 \\ \\ \implies x= \dfrac{36}{4} \\ \\ \implies x = 9

Hence

• Catherine has = x = $9,
• and James has = 5 +3x = 5 + 3(9) = $32

Thanks.

2/3 of a pizza was left over. A group of friends divided the leftover pizza into pieces each equal to 1/18 of the original pizza
sasho [114]
There was 10 friends because there if you times 2/3 by 6 you get 12/18 and 10 people eat it then there is 3/18 left and after you simpfly it you get 1/6

When you add the same number to each side of an equation, do you always get an equivalent equation? webasign?
CaHeK987 [17]
Yes   you always do.

eg x - 2 = 8

x - 2 + 2 = 8 + 2

x = 10
if we plug x = 10 into the original equation we se  that this fits:-

10 - 2 = 8
