1) Autotrophs have the ability to make their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.

They are also known as producers.

Heterotrophs cannot create their own food therefore depend directly or indirectly on the Autotrophs for their food and are therefore called consumers.

2) The two food making processes include chemosynthesis and photosynthesis.

Chemosynthesis is simply a process in which some
organisms use chemical energy instead of light
energy to produce "food." Such organisms include Nitrosomonas, Nictrobacter , etc
Photosynthesis is the
process by which green plants and
certain other organisms transform
light energy into chemical energy.
During photosynthesis in green
plants, light energy is captured and
used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into
oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.

Photosynthesis provides over 99 percent of the

energy for life on earth. It is often considered to be the single

most important life process on Earth. It changes light

energy into chemical energy and also releases

oxygen. Without photosynthesis, there would be no

oxygen in the atmosphere.

3) The flow of energy through living organisms begins

with photosynthesis. Green plants make their food then, when heterotrophs feed on them, there is a transfer of energy. When a bigger heterotroph feed on the previous one, a lesser amount of energy is transferred til the chain gets to the decomposers.

For instance,

Grasses → Grass eating Mice → Snake → Hornbill

The grasses are the producers, the mice, snake and hornbill are the primary, secondary and tertiary consumers respectively. In each, there is a flow of chemical energy and a release of heat energy. This flow of energy is unidirectional.

The substance that is predominately absorbed in rain forests would be carbon dioxide, I believe. As many tropical trees are present and will uptake CO2 to synthesize glucose or sugar as a product of photosynthesis.
