So first they both have to share a common denominator which will be 10 so for 11/5 you multiply 2 to the denominator. Whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top so 2 times 11 is 22. For 1/2 you multiply the bottom by 5, whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top so 5 times 1 is 5, everything converted should be 22/10-5/10 and that equals 17/10
