Direct and indirect speeches are two ways Which a person's statement can be reported. A person's actual words are referred to as Direct speech , then quoting the person using your own words is indirect speech

Direct Speech: Arun said to me ,'' where is my bag"?

Indirect Speech: Arun asked me where his bag was.

In the first sentence,  the message conveys the speaker using his actual words but in the second sentence, the message was still passed in the same meaning but in the reporter's voice.
