This incident would occurred during the war. Also, passage 2 reveals that Ying is joining others to defend against the Manchu. She is sad but has no choice than to take his brother's place. Her sadness points to the fact that she wasn't happy going but she can't help it because war is at hand.

These two scenarios point to the hardships of war which people experience. It's either they are unable to deliver their loved ones or they are forced to face the war- dying or surviving.
