The Magna Carta is a <em>charter of rights</em> which main first purpose was to maintain peace between the unpopular King John of England and a group of rebel barons. This statment promised to protect church rights as well as the protection to the barons from illegal imprisionment, to give them access to swift justice, and also to limit the feudal payments to the Crown.
