The winter of 1886-1887 had a severe negative effect on the cattle industry. The very deep snow prevented the cattle from reaching the grass resulting in around 15% of open range cattle’s death. Ranchers/ Farmers often sold the cattle because they couldn’t care for them making the prices drop more.
