The definition of Imperialism is to extend a country's power and influence through diplomacy and military force.

This was motivated by four important factors. (Can be five too.)

They wanted political, economic, cultural, and geographic power.

This was also important for a desire for money, to expand and control foreign trade. They wanted to get raw materials and cheap labor.

They wanted to claim territory to help protect their empire. This was mainly an event to gain power, materials, and money.

Also, the emperor of Japan did not have total control of the aristocracy, it might be concluded that the European system was more centralized. The samurais were under payment of their lord, whereby their european counterparts, in exchange for their wartime contributions and efforts, received lands.
