What effect do you think the Homestead and Pullman strikes had on American culture and society in this time period?
shusha [124]

The aftermath of the Homestead strike resulted in Carnegie Steel and co. cutting wages down by a fifth, its owner refusing to deal with the steel workers union and increasing working hours from 8 hours a day to 12 hours. The continuous strikes and rioting left lots damaged infrastructure and the eventual arrival of the military led to the surrender of the cause.

The result of the Pullman strike left the national railroad system damaged and half functioning. It created a dispute between the American Railroad Union and the government due to the collapsing of the post service. The leader of the Union, Eugene V. Debs, was arrested. After military intervention due to continuous interefering with trains that carried mail cars, the strike collapsed.

In an effort to create a better climate for workes and organzied labor after the strikes, president Grover Cleveland designated Labor Day as a federal holiday.
