Burgoyne's army was carefully and meticulously harassed all along the route south. Forcing them to retreat to Canada for the winter of 1776-77. Burgoyne faced further engagements as his army tried to advance southward to Albany in 1777. By the time Burgoyne reached Saratoga, north of Albany, in the fall of 1777, only 5,800 of his men remained. The increasingly confident colonial army surrounded him as he tried to retreat.

On October 17, Burgoyne, without supplies or hopes for reinforcements, surrendered his entire army to General Gates.
