La principal diferencia entre las clases altas y bajas en el feudalismo fue la tremenda disparidad de la riqueza entre ambas clases sociales. Los señores feudales, dueños de las tierras, eran personas extremadamente ricas. Lo tenían todo, dinero, recursos, tierras, lujosas viviendas y sirvientes. En contraste, las clases bajas no tenían nada, eran gente pobre que trabajaban bajo el cobijo de la clase feudal para poder sobrevivir.

Una de las principales características de la Edad Media, fue la implementación del sistema económico-social llamado feudalismo. En este sistema feudal, el señor feudal o dueño de las tierras, contrataba campesinos para que pudieran trabajar la tierra y producir cosechas. A cambio de su trabajo, estos campesinos recibían comida, techo y una pequeña porción de las cosechas para que pudieran sobrevivir. No era un sistema de esclavitud, aunque el campesino era pobre, explotado, y dependía de los favores del señor feudal para sobrevivir trabajando sus tierras.

Precisamente, por esa razones que se dice que la relación entre la nobleza y el vasallaje era una relación de seguridad. Los vasallos trabajaban para los señores feudales a cambio de un techo, comida y algo de sustenta. Mientras que la nobleza se beneficiaba de explotar a los vasallos para poder enriquecerse más y maximizar sus riquezas, así como tener cierta protección a través de los llamados caballeros medievales.
