An example of an equation to represent the equation could be 2x+ y = 40, where x equals the number of rings, and y the number of pins

               6 + 4 ÷ 2

The "order of operations" (which you learned a long time ago
if you're in high school now) says that division should be done
before addition.

So do the division:        4 ÷ 2 = 2

Now you have                6 + 2

Now do the addition:     6 + 2 = 8 .

This is a simple proportion problem. On the left side of the colon : there's a 1 and xy. On the right it's yz and a 2. This means for every one xy there will be two yz. So, if there are 2 xy there are 4 yz

A flagpole that was originally 24 feet tall has cracked 9 feet from the ground and has fallen as if hinged. Find
Dimas [21]
The top of the flag pole touched the ground 12 feet from the base.

Since it cracked 9 feet from the base, 9 is the vertical leg of the right triangle formed.  The rest of the flagpole, 24-9=15, is the hypotenuse, as it is slanted down to the ground.  The missing side is the horizontal leg, which we will call b:

9²+b²=15²
81+b²=225

Subtract 81 from both sides:
81+b²-81=225-81
b²=144

Take the square root of both sides:
√b²=√144
b=12
