The Sniper killing his enemy creates an internal conflict.  We see this in the quote, "...cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody." This shows how the sniper was upset or even mortified at the killing of his enemy. Thus The Sniper feels remorse and probably wishes this said war had never started.
