The poor state of education in the country is because of a lack of policies that would otherwise improve the education quality in the country. New Mexico Legislature should, therefore, come up with strategies such as a sliding pay scale for teachers pay that would improve education quality and ensure there is enough funding for the implementation of these policies.
There have been solutions previously suggested by some state leaders. In 2011, Ms. Skandera, the state’s education secretary-designate rolled out an aggressive teacher evaluation system devised to improve student achievement (Education Week Magazine, 2017). However, educators maintained that MS Skandera had shunned other valid ways to judge teachers. The New Mexico teachers resisted the new plan for evaluation. Educators suggested that MS. Skandera should have given more weight to classroom observations and to stop the idea of starting the assessments gradually. Furthermore, the state rolled out Principals Pursuing Excellence and Teachers Pursuing Excellence programs, with the aim to mentor educators to increase reading and math proficiency rates among the students.
