Why did the guillotine replace previous execution methods during the Revolution?

Because it was believed that it will provide more humane method of execution.

Explanation:

Until guillotine was introduced different methods were used. Most of them were unhuman, especially because due some of them those who were executed would suffer during the process itself. That is why guillotine was introduced as more effective and precise method.
