JAMES K. POLK. The acquisition of Texas, New Mexico, and California took place over a period of about 10 years and three presidents. It started in 1836 with President Martin van Buren who attempted to annex Texas but did not want a war with Mexico. President van Buren's successor John Tyler continued with van Buren's efforts and managed to create a Treaty of annexation in 1844, but did not get the necessary votes from the senate for ratification. Then came President James K. Polk. President Tyler and President-elect Polk together were successful in obtaining the votes for the annexation of Texas in 1845. The succeeding events; the Oregon Treaty with the British in 1846 and the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848, lead the way for the acquisition of not only Texas, but New Mexico, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Oregon. This is considered to be the largest acquisition of land the United States has ever experienced.

What did many Anti-Federalists fear about the new constitution?
Agata [3.3K]
Many Anti-Federalists preferred a weak central government because they equated a strong government with British tyranny. Others wanted to encourage democracy and feared a strong government that would be dominated by the wealthy. They felt that the states were giving up too much power to the new federal government.

What is Zinn's approach to the study of history? What does he suggest occurs when history is told as a story of human progress?
alina1380 [7]

Zinn said that study of history should be done from the point of view of the common man. It should not be done from the point of view of the historians or the politicians.

Explanation:

Zinn thought that the way we study history is very boring and that we have been bent under the heavy weight of the history books which lean up on us. They have set from the point of view of the historians and the politicians. This makes it very boring for us to read this subject.

History should rather be studied from the point of view of the common man so that they can understand it better because through this way they can related to it in a better way. When it is told in the form of a story, the interest of the people increases.

How did the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente contribute to the start of World War I?
Greeley [361]
In 1871 two new major states of Europe had been formed—the German Empire and the kingdom of Italy. The new German Empire, under the hand of Otto von Bismarck, was steered carefully, always with an eye upon France, for the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) had left France thirsting for revenge and for recovery of the lost provinces of Alsace and Lorraine.
