Passage 1 Called the "Golden State," California is the third largest state in the U.S. It is only smaller than Alaska and Texas.

In 1849, thousands of people moved there to look for gold. They were called “forty-niners” in honor of the date they moved. The state was admitted to the Union in 1850. Today, it is known as the land of the giant redwoods. It has the highest population of any state in the nation and is our main farming state. It is also the home of Hollywood, the center of the movie and TV business. Passage 2 The first big gold strike in the U.S. started at Sutter's Mill in 1848. It was found near a river in California. Soon, thousands of people traveled to the state to find gold. Most people lived outside in rundown camps. They put up with harsh weather and wildlife. They did not mind because they thought they would find gold and get rich. These people were called “forty-niners” because they mostly moved in 1849. That year, about 80,000 people had moved west. By 1853, the number went up to 250,000. 4 Which statement best describes how passage 2 is different from passage 1? A. Passage 2 explains the meaning of "forty-niners." B. Passage 2 gives the nickname for the state. C. Passage 2 gives the date that California became a state. D. Passage 2 gives facts about how many people moved west.
