The border was connected to the eastern regions by waterways and an increasing infrastructure of railroads. From either the farmland to the docks, produce was transported by small boats across riverbeds. Large sailing ships transported goods and people between ports. Railroads grew to link cities, allowing everyone to travel more quickly.
