An onion is an example of a bulb, a tunicate bulb specifically. Tunicate bulbs have a papery outer coating to help keep them from drying out.
Another way to tell that an onion is a bulb is by cutting one in half from top to bottom you will be able to see that the roots at the bottom of the bulb anchor the plant to the ground and absorb water and nutrients.
