Southerners opposed slavery in a wide variety of ways. Teaching the enslaved how to read was a direct violation of ant-slave codes that were prevalent during the antebellum period (1830-1860). Many Southerners were also actively involved in antislavery and later abolitionist work. They hid, fed and financed fugitives who escaped from plantations in various parts of the South.

The Marshall Plan was a United States' plan to help Western Europe to recover from the destruction caused by World War II, thus "doing well by doing good". The financial aid the US sent to Western Europe was rewarded with increased economical relationships with European countries and with the spreading of American culture in Europe which helped the US to sort of keeping it as an influence zone.
